Why I Became A Financial Advisor

When it comes to choosing a career, it is often the example and influence of others that inspires us to follow a particular path. Early on in my college career, I had the opportunity to shadow a financial advisor. I loved how he was able to interact with clients on a daily basis and make a difference in their financial lives. My twin passions for people and finances suddenly made sense, and I immediately started pursuing what has become an incredibly fulfilling career.

Starting Out

After my experience shadowing this advisor, I started taking the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) courses at the The University of Akron. I was originally an engineering and economics major, but the financial topics I was studying soon took precedence. I spent my free time founding the Student Financial Planning Association (FPA) and working as a client service and wealth management intern at a financial advising firm. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a certificate in financial planning in 2012 and eventually earned the CFP® and Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®) designations. During my college years, I threw myself into learning about different roles in the financial industry, which led me to the decision to offer fee-only advice.

After college, I spent half a year in portfolio management but quickly determined that I preferred the personal side of financial planning. I then spent three years as a staff advisor at a financial firm, acting as second chair to high net-worth clients.

My Role Today

In January of 2017, I joined the incredible team at Cornerstone Capital Advisors. I am now a Lead Advisor and Senior Financial Planning Analyst. Today, I spend my time helping clients develop a financial plan to meet their short-term and long-term goals through investment, retirement, income tax, estate, and college planning. While I work with a wide range of clients, including retirees who have saved for a long time, business owners, corporate executives, and physicians, my passion is in helping next-generation leaders who want to outsource their financial needs so they can focus on what truly matters to them. My clients understand the importance of strategic advice and recognize that getting professional guidance early on can put them on the right path to financial independence.

Challenges And Victories

As with any job, there are challenges I face and victories I celebrate. In my case, the most difficult part of my job is also the most fulfilling. Something that sets Cornerstone Capital Advisors apart from other firms is the amount of time we take to complete a comprehensive review of a client’s situation before making any recommendations. While this can be time-consuming and require plenty of industry knowledge, it’s also rewarding when clients appreciate how much we invest in them and their financial life.

I love that moment when I can present all the hard work I have put into a client’s financial plan and give them the opportunity to see what their financial life could look like with my help. There’s nothing like sitting down with a client who has no idea where they stand in terms of retirement, then being able to simplify their situation and put into clear terms what needs to be done in order to get from point A to point B.

It’s these moments and these relationships that drive me to work hard every day. I desire to make a positive impact in the lives of each and every person I meet with and want them to know they are in good hands and can be confident in our process and service.

What I Offer

I believe my clients choose to work with me for a few different reasons. First, I offer my advice solely on a fee-only basis. I am not incentivized to offer products that may not be the right fit for my clients solely because it offers a greater payout for me. My independence allows me to offer recommendations from a broad range of strategies, and as a fiduciary, work in my clients best interest. Secondly, although I am in the early years of my career, I have obtained a wide breadth of knowledge from working side by side with successful and experienced advisors and clients from varied backgrounds. Finally, my age gives me the ability to stick with my clients for the long run. Clients often want an advisor who will be a lifelong advocate for them, and since I’m not retiring anytime soon, we can work to build a long-term relationship that will benefit them for decades to come.

Kevin Spray is a Lead Advisor and Senior Financial Planning Analyst at Cornerstone Capital Advisors, where he assists clients with the development of a financial plan to meet their short-term and long-term goals through investment, retirement, income tax, estate, and college planning.
