Why I Became A Financial Advisor

Like most people, I wanted to have a career that was both personally fulfilling and served others, making their lives better. I have been in the financial industry for over 20 years but didn’t start out in the same role I’m in today. My career journey began when I graduated from Walsh University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. I immediately started working as a CPA at a large firm, conducting audits of both financial statements and retirement plans. I felt like I was working a lot of hours but not accomplishing much. Then, as luck would have it, I discovered the firm’s Personal Financial Counseling Group and jumped on board. I was inspired and motivated by the idea of spending my time helping people save money on their taxes and make money on their investments.

My Role Today

After eight years working as an accountant and financial advisor for a variety of firms, including Wells Fargo and Merrill Lynch, I received the incredible opportunity to come on board at Cornerstone Capital Advisors, one of the largest advisory firms in Northeast Ohio. In my current role as the president of Cornerstone, I serve business owners and investment committees of retirement plans. My business owner clients face complex financial issues and need a trusted advisor to act as a personal CFO, helping them preserve their wealth, mitigate taxes, and protect their assets. My investment committee clients are stewards and fiduciaries of someone else’s money and need to delegate their investment fiduciary responsibility to a prudent expert.

My goal is to give my clients confidence and clarity about their most important goals and values. I believe that our work at Cornerstone Capital Advisors adds great value to our clients’ financial situation and that clients choose to work with us because of our four pillars of trust, experience, reputation, and service.

Hurdles And Triumphs

No job is free from challenges, and that is definitely true of working in the financial industry. There are many aspects of our financial lives that we can and should control, such as following time-tested financial principles of saving, eliminating debt, and minimizing taxes. But when it comes to investing, there’s no predicting what the markets will do. It can be an incredibly difficult pill to swallow when investment returns do not meet investment expectations, but we do our best to mitigate risk and implement wise strategies, always putting our clients first.

Despite the challenges, I wouldn’t want any other career. The most fulfilling part of my job is the long-lasting relationships I have developed with my clients. They trust me to take care of their financial lives, and I do not take that trust lightly. I have made it a habit to ask myself this question: “Are we doing everything we can for our clients to have time, security, and peace of mind?” This, plus building my team and helping each team member become better planners and advisors, is what drives me to work hard every day.
